The office of Studio Miti is an old townhouse located in Ladprao district, Bangkok, Thailand. The architect utilized the space for firm activities. The architect utilized the space by dedicating the ground floor to a meeting room that accommodates 20 people, equipped with premium sliding doors that can expand the room’s capacity to accommodate up to 30 individuals.
With this being the last unit and adjacent to surrounding areas, it’s impacted by the inability to create side openings. Furthermore, being west- and east-facing, the building experiences high temperatures. Creating shading elements to control sunlight and heat adequately was thus a preliminary idea for this building. Initially, the architect constructed a sunshade wall parallel to the original building’s wall, leaving enough space for sunlight to penetrate into the workspace. This sunshade wall was further developed to be operable, allowing for adjusting sunlight exposure during appropriate times of the day on the west and east sides. On the second, third, and floating levels, addressing this issue facilitated the creation of flexible spaces adaptable to varying light conditions and offering views at suitable times.
In terms of the main building materials, the architect custom-made the wall with lightweight concrete block materials with semi-transparent characteristics, revealing curved lines that play with sunlight and shadow simultaneously. This material was deliberately chosen as the primary material for the entire exterior of the building due to a deep understanding of its properties. The architect intentionally leveraged the effects of sunlight and shadow on this material as the primary aesthetic element of the building, choosing to authentically showcase the beauty of these effects under varying sunlight and shadow conditions each day.
Finally, the architect shares and communicates these fun and comforting experiences with external individuals through the imposing and towering facade of this building, which can bring smiles to the faces of passersby.
